The voice that lies to me

Hello darkness
My old friend

Yes, I’m talking to you
The stupid, nagging voice
In my head

You always try to tear me down
And you do it in my own voice
The sound that I identify with
Used against me

You make it hard not to listen
Makes it hard not to assume
That you’re speaking the truth

And on top of that
You know so well which buttons to press
You know exactly where my weak spots are

But over time, I’ve learned
To recognize you
To know when it is you that is speaking
And not myself

I’ve learned how you hijack my voice
I’ve learned how you lie
I’ve learned to recognize the difference
Between when you talk, and when I talk

I’ve learned what gives you power
And I’ve learned how to take that power away
At least for the most part

So now, you sit there
Somewhere in my mind
Sometimes you try to tell your lies
You try to make yourself be relevant again

But your voice grows softer
Less overwhelming
Less convincing

I’ll never get rid of you completely
You’re a part of me
But I recognize you for what you are

The voice that lies to me
